Pee Wee Baseball and Rotten Tomatoes

My youngest son, Aaron, is playing Pee Wee Baseball this summer. For those unfamiliar with this level of youth baseball, Pee Wee’s is for 7 and 8 year olds.  One of the key differences in the game for these kids, who are participating in “competitive” baseball for the 1st time, is that instead of the kids pitching to each other, a machine is used for consistent speed and accuracy.

Aaron’s coach is Todd Wienke. When Todd is not influencing young minds, he is the Director of Midwest Sales for Flixster & Rotten Tomatoes.

Todd brings the right attitude to the ballpark. He has only 3 rules for the boys to adhere to:

1. Have Fun

2. Be a Good Sport

3. Have Fun

While adults live in a somewhat more complex world with greater consequences for failure than Pee Wee ball players, these 3 simple rules are probably the ones that we grown-ups overlook the most. And what is truly interesting is that the more fun the kids are having (and the less pressure they are feeling to perform), the better they play.

As I enter the 2nd half of my RPO year, I need to remember Todd’s tenets. Recruitment process outsourcing is a tough competitive business. The next 6 months at Pinstripe, as everyone stretches to hit (or exceed) their goals, is going to be more stressful than the 1st 6 months of the year. This means that no matter how hard I work, and whether I win or lose, I need to:

1. Have Fun

2. Be a Good Sport

3. Have Fun

And just like my son and his teammates, the more fun I have (selling RPO), the better I will do (selling RPO).

Barry, my boys are 8 and 6 and just finished baseball season. And while I was impressed at the Babe Ruth hits and the Brooks Robinson fielding, what brought me the most joy was watching the camaraderie and hearing the laughter while each respective boy was playing.
