November 10th marks the 40th anniversary of children’s TV show Sesame Street. To celebrate, Sesame Street’s website has been running a contest, where visitors can vote for their favorite episodes from the show’s impressive four-decade public television run.

Oscar

Unfortunately, I was 10 and the youngest in my family in 1969 so I totally missed out on Sesame Street. So while everyone around me at Pinstripe is reminiscing and sharing their favorite Big Bird or Elmo memories, I’m simply left out. It is apparent that their lives have been enriched by this phenomena (and they were also more likely better prepared for kindergarten). My life and Sesame Street never intersected.

Recruitment Process Outsourcing has been around for 15 years or so and, yet, there seem to be many organizations, industries, and Human Resource professionals that have missed out on this phenomena. They have missed out on the enrichment and benefits of RPO  like I missed out on the developmental opportunities of Sesame Street.

For whatever reason, many HR and Talent Acquisition professionals have never had the opportunity to “watch” an episode of RPO. RPO is becoming so pervasive it’s hard to imagine not crossing paths with our service offerings. Maybe we need exposure through licensed merchandise to gain Sesame Street status and acceptance.

Like Sesame Street, RPO has revolutionized a part of our lives and it continues to evolve as our world evolves.

I can just imagine how terribly isolated these key human resource executives feel at a SHRM event or party while everyone is warmly chatting and dotingly recollecting about their RPO version of Grover, Bert, and Oscar.

I know the feeling. I have felt the pain.
